Prince Beelzebub and his friend Thief agree to help Rao find the legendary Phantom Lake hidden somewhere in the desert. Rao, a former officer in the king's army turned sheriff of a small town, decides to fight the king's greed and asks for help from the demon tribe. After many years of wars and natural disasters, water supplies are almost exhausted, and the tyrannical king of the land monopolizes the few available. The story is set in a desert world inhabited by two main species, humans and demons.

It was serialized on Weekly Shonen Jump between May and August 2000, and the chapters were later collected in a single manga volume. Sand Land is the first manga Toriyama created and published after the conclusion of Dragon Ball.
